What We Look For in Summer Associate Candidates
When we hire new associates, we are looking for talented colleagues and future partners.
We ask ourselves:
“Who do you want working with you on the most challenging projects for our clients?”
“Would this candidate contribute to the culture of teamwork, superior legal work and client service?”
“Does this candidate bring judgment and perspective and broaden the diversity of our firm?”
Due to the way we staff projects and hand responsibility to associates relatively early in their tenure, we are looking for talented and motivated future lawyers who are ready to learn, to take on leadership roles and to become part of a team of first-rate lawyers. There is no need for particular experience in the media or communications industries, and there are no prerequisites. In fact, the lawyers at Dow Lohnes represent a wide spectrum of backgrounds and experiences, and that is an important reminder that we must remain open to applications from students, clerks and lawyers with all sorts of experiences.
Most of the students joining our summer program – as well as the new lawyers joining the firm – have demonstrated top academic performance at some of the finest law schools in the country, often serving on law reviews, excelling in moot court competitions, undertaking leadership roles in various campus or community organizations and participating directly in supervised pro bono and other clinical programs. In many cases, our new lawyers have had judicial clerkships, significant entrepreneurial experience, or a strong background in our clients’ industries.

“I came to Dow Lohnes because I really felt comfortable with the people I interviewed with, and I have really enjoyed this summer because I still feel at ease in the firm. The attorneys are real people and have real lives outside the firm, which is a large part of what makes the work and atmosphere so interesting.”
Sara Church, 2006 Summer Associate from University of Michigan Law School
