DC Summer Program

Dow Lohnes has shifted its summer program from a large, traditional program for students generally interested in our practices to a much more focused "fellowship" program for students with special interests or expertise in our clients' industries and our particular practice areas. Because of this focus and special attention to rising new lawyers aspiring to work in our industries, Dow Lohnes is one of the best places to begin a legal career and practice law for top students who have a strong interest in what we do.

There are several aspects of the Dow Lohnes Summer Program that together make our program unique. First, our program provides an outstanding opportunity to work with some of the best and brightest lawyers in some of the most fascinating legal fields: new technology, education, communications, telecommunications, intellectual property, privacy, First Amendment, litigation, corporate transactions, securities and taxation, to name a few.

Second, by narrowing our focus and hiring only those summer associates with demonstrated high levels of achievement and interests in our practices, we are able to match more closely our summer hires with anticipated associate positions. While it is often difficult to obtain an offer in a private law firm directly from law school in some of the most interesting legal fields in Washington, DC, once we have identified a top candidate we integrate that student into the particular practice group he or she has selected. This minimizes the uncertainty associated with many large summer programs and makes the transition from law school to practice smoother.

Third, because we hire specifically into practice groups, the summer associate experience is tailored to the desires of the summer associate and the needs of the particular practice group. This creates a greater incentive to provide training as early as possible and creates an opportunity for selected students to begin to develop expertise and gain valuable experience sooner that they would in firms with more general programs. It is this aspect of the program – the close relationship between a specific group and a law student – that inspires the label “fellowship.”

Finally, all the best aspects of the traditional Dow Lohnes summer program continue and afford each summer associate a dynamic view of attorney life. Assignments mirror the assignments given to junior associates, and summer associates have the opportunity to work directly with partners, associates and teams handling real client projects, disputes and transactions. Compensation for participants in our summer associate fellowship program will be competitive with the large DC summer programs. And, of course, the firm provides many opportunities for each summer associate to obtain lawyer feedback, evaluations and training, to participate in social activities throughout Washington DC, and to get to know the lawyers across the firm.

Dow Lohnes is looking for law students with the qualities needed for long-term success at a premiere law firm dedicated to client service. Characteristics shared by many successful lawyers at the firm include a high degree of motivation and enthusiasm, excellent academic performance, diverse interests, and a commitment to success.
