DC Summer Program - Activities & Events

Dow Lohnes takes pride in preparing a wide variety of cultural, educational and social events for the summer program. While it may look like fun and games (and it is!) the idea is to allow each summer associate to explore Washington D.C., to meet the attorneys in social settings and to become familiar with the firm culture. The events revolve around the many historical, artistic and entertainment centers in Washington, and the summer associates interact with our lawyers, not just as colleagues, but as friends.

End of the Summer Awards Banquet

The firm hosts a welcome reception to introduce our new summer associates to the attorneys. In 2006, the firm hosted a Mexican fiesta complete with a salsa band, Mexican munchies and frozen margaritas. There are a variety of other firm-wide events through the summer, including an afternoon attorney picnic in Annapolis, a high stakes Casino Night at the home of the Chair of the Hiring Committee and regular TGIF parties for the attorneys, summer associates and the staff to wind down after the work week. We also facilitate informal lunches with associates and partners so that summer associates meet a cross-section of attorneys from different groups and sample the area's restaurants. In addition, each practice group hosts its own separate social event so that the summer associates can meet the attorneys in each of the different practice areas.

The following are a few of the social agenda highlights from summer 2006:

  • Chartered boat cruise along the Potomac River
  • Spamalot at the National Theater
  • DC United soccer game
Tour of the Phillips Collection followed by a wine tasting
  • All associates happy hour at Agua Ardienti
  • Practice Group events, such as the Strike Bethesda Bowling, Dinner and Pop Culture Triva Challange at a partner's home, a Cooking Class at Sur la Table, and many others
  • Nationals games at RFK
  • Special outing of the summer associate's choosing for the summer associate and his or her advisor

Lawyers Have Heart

“I feel that the people at Dow Lohnes were the most positive aspect of my summer experience. I had the opportunity to work with all levels of attorneys, from junior associates to senior partners. The summer program provided numerous social opportunities to get to know the attorneys on a personal level. Every attorney I worked with was friendly, accessible, and incredibly helpful. I can honestly state that I could have not asked for a better summer associate experience.”

Leigh Notestein, 2006 Summer Associate from The George Washington University Law School
